Physics Noticeboard British Physics Olympiad
Results Congratulations to Dominic Hayes, who obtained a Bronze II award in the British Physics Olympiad. Michael Everard, Daniel Funnell, Timothy Gibbons, Jennifer O'Grady and Christopher Rix also obtained Commendation awards. The awards were today presented in full school assembly. Light Express Roadshow Today, the Salesian College Hall was transformed by a spectacular laser light show. The Light Express Roadshow from the University of Southampton School of Physics and Astronomy put on a colourful and incredible display of Class 4 balloon-popping lasers to a large group of GCSE Physics students. The presenters explained principles such as how total internal reflection uses optical fibres for communications and the Internet. The introduction to photonics gave everyone an eyetest and each student took home a diffraction grating to disperse light into its constituent colours. In addition, students gained an insight into Physics at University and to careers in research. An excellent event was had by all and students took the opportunity at the end of session to examine the equipment used during the display.
